XOM: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 1985 (491 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 350 (71%). The lump sum usually won, but roughly one start in 3 favored spreading it out. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2019, when it finished the year 55% ahead.

Worst drop

XOM's worst fall in this history was -58.4%, a loss of more than half, from April 2014 to October 2020. Getting back to the old high took until January 2022: 15 months from the bottom and 7.8 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $416 at the low.

ExxonMobil dividends

XOM paid $4.12 per share over the last 12 months, quarterly. At $165.30 that is 2.49%, a moderate yield. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +2.8% a year, slowly, about in line with inflation. The yearly total did not fall once in the last ten years. Amounts are adjusted for splits.

About ExxonMobil

ListedNYSE (history back to Standard Oil)

DividendPaid quarterly

ExxonMobil is the largest U.S. oil and gas company, with businesses from drilling to refining and chemicals. Its stock moves largely with oil prices.

Exxon was the most valuable U.S. company for much of the 2000s, then went through a long slump as oil prices fell after 2014; it was removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2020. Rising energy prices in 2021 and 2022 brought a strong comeback.

Much of its long-term return comes from a large, steadily raised dividend, which it kept paying even through the 2020 collapse in oil prices.
