UBER: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2019 (79 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 47 (59%). With Uber's short, choppy history, timing has mattered a lot. Monthly investing won every start in 2021, as the stock headed into its slump. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2021, when it finished the year 46% ahead.

Worst drop

UBER's worst fall in this history was -62.6%, a loss of more than half, from April 2021 to June 2022. Getting back to the old high took until November 2023: 17 months from the bottom and 2.6 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $374 at the low.

Uber's high in early 2021 came on hopes for a post-pandemic travel boom. Rising rates in 2022 hit companies that were still losing money, and Uber lost more than 60% by mid-2022. Its first profits brought it back above the old high by late 2023.

About Uber

CompanyUber Technologies, Inc.
ListedMay 2019 (NYSE)
SectorIndustrials (ride-hailing and delivery)
DividendNone

Uber runs the largest ride-hailing network outside China and, through Uber Eats, one of the largest food delivery businesses. It went public in May 2019 at $45 a share and closed below that price on its first day of trading.

For its first decade Uber lost billions of dollars a year. 2023 was its first full year with an operating profit, it joined the S&P 500 that December, and in 2024 it announced its first share buyback.

The big open question is self-driving cars. Uber has partnered with Waymo and other robotaxi companies to run their vehicles on its network instead of building its own, but investors worry that robotaxi operators could eventually bypass it.

From losses to profits

Uber lost more than $8 billion in 2019, its IPO year. Cost cuts, higher prices and fast-growing side businesses such as advertising turned that into an operating profit in 2023 and strong free cash flow since. That change is what lifted the stock well above its IPO price.

The robotaxi risk

If self-driving cars take over, Uber's network could become more valuable, as the app riders already open to book a trip, or less, if carmakers and tech companies run their own robotaxi apps. Uber has signed deals with Waymo, several Chinese self-driving companies and others to put their cars on its app.

Questions about UBER

Did UBER beat the S&P 500?

Yes. Over the last 5 years it was ahead by 1.0 percentage points a year: +12.5% a year for UBER against +11.5% for SPY, dividends reinvested. It also fell harder at its worst (-62.6% against -23.9% for SPY over the same history).

Does Uber pay a dividend?

No. Uber returns cash through share buybacks, which it started in 2024. All of its return so far has come from the share price.
