NOBL: all at once or every month?
Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2013 (146 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 117 (80%). Aristocrats have rarely fallen far for long, so most starting months favored investing at once. The exceptions clustered just before the COVID crash and in 2022. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2019, when it finished the year 8% ahead.
Worst drop
NOBL's worst fall in this history was -23.2%, milder than the worst falls of most stock funds, from December 2019 to March 2020. It was back at the old high by November 2020, only 8 months after the bottom. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $768 at the low.
The COVID crash. NOBL fell about 23%, a bit more than the S&P 500 on month-end prices, as its industrial and consumer companies sold off, and it was back by November 2020.

NOBL paid $1.17 per share over the last 12 months, in March, June, September and December. At $59.77 that is 1.96%, a moderate yield. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +5.4% a year, steadily. The yearly total fell in 2017, 2022. Amounts are adjusted for splits.

NOBL holds the S&P 500's Dividend Aristocrats: companies that have raised their dividend every year for at least 25 years in a row. Each gets about the same weight, reset every quarter, and the list is reviewed each January. A company that fails to raise its payout even once is dropped.
The 25-year rule produces an old-economy mix of industrials, consumer staples, materials and health care, with very little technology. The yield is modest, because many Aristocrats raise their payouts by small amounts and the index looks at the streak, not the size of the dividend.
Aristocrats, SCHD and VIG
All three favor dividend growth in different ways. NOBL requires 25 straight years of increases and weights its companies equally. VIG requires 10 years of increases and weights by size, so it holds giants such as Microsoft and Apple. SCHD needs 10 years of payments plus financial-strength tests. Since NOBL launched in 2013, both SCHD and VIG have done better, and at 0.35% NOBL's fee is several times theirs.
Questions about NOBL
Did NOBL beat the S&P 500?
No. Over the last 10 years it trailed by 3.9 percentage points a year: +10.7% a year for NOBL against +14.6% for SPY, dividends reinvested. Its worst fall was about the same as SPY's.
What happens when a company cuts its dividend?
It is removed from the index at the next review. AT&T in 2022, and Walgreens and 3M in 2024, left the Aristocrats this way after cutting their dividends.
