VIG: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2006 (235 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 190 (81%). That is lopsided: for VIG, waiting to invest has usually cost money. The best case for monthly investing was a start in May 2008, when it finished the year 28% ahead.

Worst drop

VIG's worst fall in this history was -41.1%, a deep bear-market fall, from September 2007 to February 2009. Getting back to the old high took until February 2011: 24 months from the bottom and 3.4 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $589 at the low.

VIG dividends

VIG paid $3.65 per share over the last 12 months, quarterly. At $244.26 that is 1.49%, a small yield; nearly all of the return has come from the price. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +9.1% a year, well ahead of inflation. The yearly total did not fall once in the last ten years.

VIG holds companies that have raised their dividend for at least ten years in a row, but leaves out the top 25% by yield. The idea is to own steady growers rather than the highest payers, which is why its yield is lower than SCHD's or VYM's.

Because the screen is about growth, VIG ends up with more large technology and health care companies than a typical dividend fund, and its returns have stayed closer to the S&P 500.
