JEPQ: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2022 (43 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 41 (95%). That is lopsided: for JEPQ, waiting to invest has usually cost money. The best case for monthly investing was a start in May 2022, when it finished the year 4% ahead.

Worst drop

JEPQ's worst fall in this history was -13.5%, milder than the worst falls of most stock funds, from July 2022 to September 2022. It was back at the old high by March 2023, only 6 months after the bottom. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $865 at the low.

JEPQ dividends

JEPQ paid $5.84 per share over the last 12 months, monthly. At $53.71 that is 10.88%, a high yield, so a large part of the return arrives as cash.

JEPQ applies JEPI's approach to the Nasdaq-100: it owns mostly Nasdaq-100 stocks and sells call options on the index to generate monthly income. Because the Nasdaq-100 is more volatile, the option premiums, and so the yield, tend to be higher than JEPI's.

The cost is the same: in strong tech rallies JEPQ keeps only part of the gain. Compare it with QQQ to see how much upside was given up for the income.
