ABBV: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2013 (155 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 123 (79%). AbbVie has climbed steadily for most of its life, so investing at once usually won. The clear exception was 2018, when nearly every start favored spreading purchases out as the stock slid. The best case for monthly investing was a start in February 2018, when it finished the year 22% ahead.

Worst drop

ABBV's worst fall in this history was -39.0%, a deep bear-market fall, from February 2018 to August 2019. Getting back to the old high took until November 2020: 15 months from the bottom and 2.8 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $610 at the low.

AbbVie peaked in early 2018 and lost about 40% over the next year and a half, on worries about Humira's coming patent loss and the failure of a hoped-for cancer drug, Rova-T. The Allergan deal, announced in June 2019, sent the shares down sharply at first.

AbbVie dividends

ABBV paid $6.92 per share over the last 12 months, in January, April, July and October. At $291.31 that is 2.38%, a moderate yield. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +6.8% a year, steadily. The yearly total did not fall once in the last ten years.

How much AbbVie do you need for $1,000 a month?

About $505,162, or roughly 1,734 shares at $291.31. That uses ABBV's last 12 months of dividends ($6.92 a share, a 2.38% yield) and is before tax.

ABBV pays quarterly (ex-dividend in Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct), so “$1,000 a month” really arrives as about $3,000 four times a year.

The payout grew 6.8% a year over the last five years. If it kept that pace, about $261,521 invested today, with nothing added and nothing reinvested, would be paying $1,000 a month ten years from now. That is a projection, not a promise.

These are mostly qualified dividends, taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% at the federal level depending on your income, plus any state tax. In an IRA or Roth IRA there is no tax on them along the way.

About AbbVie

CompanyAbbVie Inc.
ListedJanuary 2013 (NYSE, spun off from Abbott)
SectorHealth care (pharmaceuticals)
DividendPaid since 2013, raised every year

AbbVie was spun off from Abbott Laboratories on January 1, 2013, taking Abbott's prescription drug business. Its main product was Humira, an injected drug for arthritis and other immune diseases that became the best-selling drug in the world.

The big question for most of AbbVie's life was what would happen when Humira lost patent protection. Cheaper copies, called biosimilars, arrived in Europe in 2018 and in the U.S. in 2023. AbbVie prepared with two newer immune drugs, Skyrizi and Rinvoq, and by buying Allergan, the maker of Botox, for about $63 billion in 2020. Together Skyrizi and Rinvoq now bring in more than Humira did at its peak.

AbbVie's payout has gone up every year since the spinoff, including a 35% jump in early 2018, and it is one of the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats.

Life after Humira

Humira's sales fell sharply once U.S. copies arrived in 2023, but AbbVie's total revenue held up better than many expected because Skyrizi and Rinvoq kept growing fast. That handoff is the main reason the stock went on to new highs after the patent cliff instead of sinking with Humira.

Botox and beauty

The Allergan deal added Botox, used both for wrinkles and for medical conditions such as migraine, plus a portfolio of other aesthetic treatments. That business depends more on consumer spending than AbbVie's prescription drugs do, and it has been the weaker part of the company in slow economic times.

Questions about ABBV

Did ABBV beat the S&P 500?

Yes. Over the last 10 years it was ahead by 7.2 percentage points a year: +21.8% a year for ABBV against +14.6% for SPY, dividends reinvested. It also fell harder at its worst (-39.0% against -23.9% for SPY over the same history).

Is AbbVie a Dividend King?

AbbVie counts the increases it made as part of Abbott before 2013, and on that basis it has raised its payout for more than 50 years in a row, which many lists treat as a Dividend King. S&P includes it among the Dividend Aristocrats.
