VXUS: all at once or every month?
Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2011 (179 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 118 (66%). The lump sum usually won, but roughly one start in 3 favored spreading it out. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2021, when it finished the year 16% ahead.
Worst drop
VXUS's worst fall in this history was -27.8%, milder than the worst falls of most stock funds, from May 2021 to September 2022. Getting back to the old high took until May 2024: 20 months from the bottom and 3.0 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $722 at the low.
VXUS dividends
VXUS paid $1.99 per share over the last 12 months, quarterly. At $80.80 that is 2.46%, a moderate yield. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +13.3% a year, well ahead of inflation. The yearly total fell in 2018, 2020, 2022. Fund payouts move around with what the holdings pay, so a lower year is not a cut in the usual sense.

VXUS owns stocks from almost every market outside the U.S., developed and emerging, in one fund. Paired with VTI it gives a whole-world portfolio, the classic 'three-fund' approach together with a bond fund.
International stocks have trailed U.S. stocks for most of the last fifteen years. Part of that came from a strong dollar, which shrinks foreign returns for U.S. investors, so currency moves can swing VXUS's results either way.
