VGT: all at once or every month?

Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2004 (263 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 203 (77%). The lump sum usually won, but roughly one start in 4 favored spreading it out. The best case for monthly investing was a start in May 2008, when it finished the year 43% ahead.

Worst drop

VGT's worst fall in this history was -50.6%, a loss of more than half, from October 2007 to February 2009. Getting back to the old high took until January 2011: 23 months from the bottom and 3.2 years from the peak. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $494 at the low.

VGT dividends

VGT paid $0.47 per share over the last 12 months, quarterly. At $107.06 that is 0.44%, a small yield; nearly all of the return has come from the price. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +0.9% a year, slowly, about in line with inflation. The yearly total fell in 2025. Amounts are adjusted for splits.

HoldingsAbout 320 U.S. technology companies

Fund details as of 2025. Check the issuer for the current expense ratio and holdings.

VGT holds U.S. information technology companies of every size: software, semiconductors and hardware. It does not hold Alphabet, Amazon or Meta, which index providers classify outside the technology sector.

A few companies such as Apple, Microsoft and NVIDIA make up a very large share of the fund, so VGT behaves much like a concentrated bet on them.

VGT or XLK?

XLK holds only the technology companies inside the S&P 500, about 70 of them, and caps its biggest positions under the rules of its index. VGT holds more than 300, including small and mid-size tech companies, and its caps are applied differently. In practice that means XLK can be even more concentrated in Apple, Microsoft and NVIDIA in some years and less in others, while VGT carries a long tail of smaller names. Neither holds Alphabet, Amazon or Meta, which surprises a lot of first-time buyers.
