SCHG: all at once or every month?
Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2010 (191 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 159 (83%). That is lopsided: for SCHG, waiting to invest has usually cost money. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2021, when it finished the year 26% ahead.
Worst drop
SCHG's worst fall in this history was -31.8%, a deep bear-market fall, from December 2021 to December 2022. It was back at the old high by December 2023, only 12 months after the bottom. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $682 at the low.
SCHG dividends
SCHG paid $0.14 per share over the last 12 months, quarterly. At $32.81 that is 0.42%, a small yield; nearly all of the return has come from the price. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +6.9% a year, steadily. The yearly total fell in 2016, 2019, 2020, 2022. Fund payouts move around with what the holdings pay, so a lower year is not a cut in the usual sense. Amounts are adjusted for splits.
| Year | Dividends / share | Change | Yield |

| 2024 | $0.11 | +14.2% | 0.40% |

SCHG is Schwab's large-cap growth fund. Like VUG, it is concentrated in the largest technology and internet companies, and its returns have tracked VUG and QQQ closely.
SCHG split 4-for-1 in October 2024, which is why its share price dropped sharply on that date in unadjusted charts. All numbers here are split-adjusted.
SCHG or VUG?
SCHG and VUG cost the same and hold most of the same companies, but they use different index providers. Schwab's index tends to hold more stocks and gives slightly more weight to the very largest names, so in years when a few giants run ahead, SCHG has often edged out VUG, and the reverse in broader rallies. Over long periods the gap between them has been small, so the choice usually comes down to which broker you use.
