AGG: all at once or every month?
Take $12,000: all of it on day one, or $1,000 a month for a year. Across every starting month since 2003 (267 of them), the lump sum was ahead after 12 months in 205 (77%). The lump sum usually won, but roughly one start in 4 favored spreading it out. The best case for monthly investing was a start in December 2021, when it finished the year 9% ahead.
Worst drop
AGG's worst fall in this history was -17.1%, milder than the worst falls of most stock funds, from July 2020 to October 2022. It is still below that high today, 6.3 years later. $1,000 invested at that peak shrank to about $829 at the low.
AGG dividends
AGG paid $3.31 per share over the last 12 months, monthly. At $96.62 that is 3.42%, a moderate yield. From 2020 to 2025 the yearly payout grew +8.9% a year, well ahead of inflation. The yearly total fell in 2019, 2020, 2021. Fund payouts move around with what the holdings pay, so a lower year is not a cut in the usual sense.
| Year | Dividends / share | Change | Yield |

AGG tracks the main benchmark for the U.S. investment-grade bond market and is practically interchangeable with BND. Its longer history, back to 2003, covers the 2008 crisis.
Bond funds like AGG have an average duration of roughly six years, which means a one-percentage-point rise in rates knocks about six percent off the price before higher interest starts to make it back.
AGG or BND?
AGG and BND are close substitutes. AGG's longer history back to 2003 lets this page show how a broad bond fund behaved in 2008, when it held its value while stocks fell by half. That role as the calm part of a portfolio is the main reason to own it, more than the yield.
